I am loving today’s Google front page! It is the 76th birthday of Roger Hargreaves, the mastermind behind the Mr Men and Little Miss books. The page keeps changing between the Mr Men & Little Miss characters – I’m spending so much time today flicking backwards and forwards to see which one it is on now!
I’ve always loved the characters (although sometimes I hard the books hard to read out loud to the children) so much so that I made a Mr Men & Little Miss cake for my eldest daughter’s christening some years ago. How strange that my mind is thrown back to her christening cake this week when I am working on the cake for my 3rd daughter’s christening – I seemed to take so long over cakes in those days – something tells me I won’t have quite so much time this week!
Happy Birthday Roger – and thanks for a wonderful set of memories!
Tips for making interesting character cakes
I absolutely loved making all the edible characters for this cake – It would be suitable for either a birthday or a non-traditional christening cake like ours. If I made this cake again now I would probably make the characters slightly bigger. One rule that I always try to follow when making character cakes is to get each character doing something – For this cake they are mainly eating sandwiches, cake or having a drink. This way there is something interesting to see each time someone looks at the cake. It also makes the time spent making each character more interesting too!
How to store edible figures on character cakes?
The hardest thing was deciding what to do with the figures after the cake had long gone. (We kept them for ages then threw them away!) For particularly sentimental or intricate figures, they can be covered with varnish and placed on a small cake board. Some customers have kept their characters in glass cabinets for years. As long as they are kept out of direct sunlight, the colours should not fade too much.

Love your cake. I saw that Google front page today, so cute!
