This is one of my most favourite cake designs (I’m pretty sure I say that for nearly every cake I do!). I love that the marzipan Teddies are slightly individual every time I make one – Surely their personality popping through? The stars (or hearts) can be arranged differently for every cake, making it special for each child.

Teddy Bear cake designs can be used for any occasion – Christening Cakes, Teddy Bear Birthday Cakes – I’ve even done a Teddy Bear Wedding Cake!

Teddy Bear cake toppers can be made with either fondant or marzipan. Both fondant and marzipan can be coloured with gel food colouring.

What you need to make your own Teddy Bear Cake Topper

  • Fondant or Marzipan – Either is good. I recommend a good brand of fondant that will hold its shape and not become too sticky when you are moulding. I have linked to white fondant and white marzipan that can be coloured easily or if you are short on time, you could buy ready coloured fondant in either teddy bear brown fondant or grey fondant.
  • Gel food colourings – You will need grey, black (for the eyes) and either pale blue or pale pink for the teddy bear features and the stars/hearts on wires. I really like Sugarflair gel colours as they are great for both really pale and vibrant cake decorations.
  • Wires for decorations – I prefer 26 gauge silver florist wires.
  • Teddy Bear Smile Tool – This little teddy bear’s smile really helps make him so cute. I do use a smile tool (part of a selection of cake decorating tools) but you can make your own using a straw cut in half.
  • Star cutters – I use a selection of sizes of star cutters – Plungers star cutter tools are best for beginners. Honestly, if you are new to cake decorating, invest in some star cutters – You will use them for so many cake designs and a star is a great way of hiding any imperfections!
  • Oval Scalloped Cookie Cutter – You will see that I like to sit my cake toppers on top of an oval scalloped shape. I like doing this as it feels like the cake topper is part of the overall design and not just plonked on top of the cake. It also hides if the top of your cake isn’t perfectly straight or smooth too.
  • Don’t forget your edible glue or even make your own edible glue!

Are Teddy Bear Cake Toppers edible?

I do put a cake dowel inside each teddy bear cake topper which means I need to tell any customers or recipients that they are not totally edible. This also goes for the wires that the stars (or hearts – see the Pink Teddy bear Cake topper below) are stuck onto.

About this Teddy Bear Christening Cake

I’m really happy to make Rowan’s Christening Cake – I made his sister Beth’s christening cake 7 years ago in the same style but pink. I even got to catch up with Rowan’s Mum (who I went to school with) and Beth on Saturday.
