Sewing craft lovers cake

Now this was a cake I could really get my teeth into. I could be as creative as I liked as long as I stuck to a sewing theme. The cake had to travel from St Helens to Scotland so it did limit some of the toppers I could include. I would love to try a sewing machine cake but definitely not for one that needs transporting.

Sewing Craft Lover's Cake

I loved the buttons and once I had decided on a blue/beige theme, there was no stopping me. The ball of wool took forever – Each thread was made separately. The only non-edible bit was the ribbon around the cake and the actual pins which I made using cake wires and a tiny ball of fondant on top of each one. (I remembered to tell the recipient not to eat the ‘pins’) I made the needles using pale blue fondant and painted with silver edible dust and alcohol.

Needle Icing Sewing Cake

I experimented making an edible zip by piping really fine royal icing and painting with the silver dust again the next day. I did the same with the thimble which is one of my most favourite items I’ve ever stuck on a cake.

Wow, oh wow, oh wow! That sewing cake must’ve taken simply AGES but the results are beyond stunning. I bet the recipient was bowled over to receive such an amazingly detailed work of art.
