A chocolate cake has to be really good for me to love it. I’ve never been the sort to choose Chocolate Cake on a menu over other desserts. I can vouch that this Double Chocolate Loaf Cake is top notch though. The hint of orange cuts through the dense Double chocolate. I also like that the orange flavour comes from a natural source rather than adding artificial flavourings too. Obviously,I’ve added Terry’s Chocolate Orange segments on the top but this is completely optional.
I’ll be serving this later with a huge dollop of vanilla ice-cream – I suspect the other Costellos will be getting the custard out. Whatever you enjoy it with, I highly recommend a side serving of a good strong cup of tea.

- 2 tablespoons Water
- 175g Butter
- 175g Soft Light Brown Sugar
- 3 Medium Eggs (Separated)
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- 2 Large Oranges (You need the zest of both but the juice of only 1 for the cake (Use the other for the frosting))

- 1/2 teaspoon Baking Powder
- 3 tablespoons Cocoa Powder
- 50g Butter
- 150g Icing Sugar
Note
This is great frozen (without the frosting)
Directions
Double Chocolate Loaf Cake
1. | |
Preheat the oven to 180C and line a 2lb Loaf Tin. I use ready made liners which save me hours!
2. | |
Melt the chocolate chunks and the water in a microwave in 2 x 30 seconds intervals at first then reduce to 10 second intervals until melted when you mix together. Allow to cool for around 3-5 minutes
3. | |
Using an electric mixer, whisk the sugar and butter until fully combined and light and fluffy.
4. | |
Add the egg yolks (one at a time) and the vanilla whilst still whisking
5. | |
When the chocolate has cooled until tepid, add to the butter/sugar mixture and continue to whisk until combined together
6. | |
Add the orange zest and the juice whilst mixing on a slow setting. Add a couple of tablespoons of the flour to stop the mixture curdling
7. | |
Stop the mixer and add the flour, baking powder and cocoa. In a separate bowl, whisk up the egg whites (either using an electric whisk but wash your blades first or a hand whisk) until soft peaks. Fold the egg whites in gently with a spatula
8. | |
Add the mixture to the loaf tin, reduce the oven's heat to 160C and bake for 45-50 minutes until a skewer comes out clear
Orange Frosting | |
9. | |
Whisk together the butter, icing sugar and the juice of the remaining orange. You may need to add more icing sugar if the orange is particularly juicy. |
Bake of the Week
I love this time of year for getting creative both with crafts and in the kitchen. Seems like me youngest two have also got the creative bug this year too. Our dining room table is constantly covered with various creations (not to mention the never ending GCSE Art projects that hang around the house too).
My featured Bake of the Week this week is inspired by Easter creativity and comes from Foodie Quine. How cute, amazing, delightful and all the other adjectives are these Tunnocks Teacake Bunny Bums?
Many Thanks as always to all of our other entries which are equally gorgeous…

I love chocolate orange so this cake looks so good to me! My mouth is watering just thinking about it!
Now I could almost taste this as I was reading. Such a mouth watering sounding cake x
Chocolate and orange is one of my favourite flavour combinations, especially in a cake. I also like that this cake freezes well so you can defrost it for when cake it needed but you don’t have time to bake one x
I love chocolate orange cake – one of my favourites. This cake looks glorious. xx
It looks delicious. Personally I’d skip the butter cream as I find that it doesn’t add anything to the cake but everything else really appeals to me.

Oh my goodness this looks absolutely delicious. There really isn’t a combination like chocolate and orange is there?
Chocolate and orange is just not a flavour combination that I enjoy, which is probably a good thing given that I’m dairy free but my dad LOVES them. Every year I get him a Terrys Chocolate Orange for Xmas. This cake would be awesome to make him for his birthday xxx

I love chocolate cake but I’m not a fan of orange in it, my partner really likes it though so this would be perfect for him x
This chocolate cake sounds delicious with or without the frosting and an added bonus is that it doesn’t take too long to prepare! Yummy!
