If you saw my Instagram profile recently, you may have seen that we paid a visit to Cowshed restaurant in Seel Street. A steakhouse in the centre of Liverpool that is renowned for its fantastic food. We are spending quite a bit of time in Liverpool at the moment due to Open Water Swimming season being in full swing, so are trying out quite a few restaurants that we've been keen to visit.
Cowshed Liverpool at a glance
- Small, intimate dining in the heart of Liverpool City Centre
- Great quality food at affordable prices -This is the home of juicy steaks
- Friendly, welcoming service
- Clear menu with easy choices for personal taste
The Arrival
It is quite easy to miss Cowshed from the street - in fact, I did and walked right passed it. Up around 4 steps to enter the building, which is Grade 2 listed and as such has no accessible entrance (I do know that the staff will do everything possible to help people with mobility problems to get into the building but this is something to be aware of - and that the toilets are downstairs).
You go straight into what will have previously been the front room that is fairly bare apart from a welcome desk. Staff are friendly and welcomed us in, taking us straight to our table.
The Cowshed Dining Room
We were in the ground floor dining room which was really small and intimate. It still had a good vibe and atmosphere though and wasn't quiet that you had to worry about other people overhearing your conversation.
There were 8 tables in the room and we were seated in one of the middle seats. We had been told that we would be when we booked. We actually rang to book the week before visiting as the website was saying they were full. The middle tables are only suitable for 2 people and were just fine for us - They also make it really easy to get the waiting staff's attention when you need another drink!

The Cowshed Menu
There's no denying that this is not the right place for vegetarians! The steak menu prides itself on being meat heavy - they know what they do well.
The menu changes slightly each month but the steaks remain the same and always use the freshest ingredients.
We chose Cajun prawns with chilli mayo dipping sauce and the Croquette Special for starters. The croquettes were Ham and Cheese with a Sweet Chilli Dip. Really, we could have done without starters as the portion size for our steak main course was huge but we were glad we did have them. The prawns in particular were really tasty, meaty and well cooked.
We chose the Greedy Cow steaks (£61.00) for 2 with 8oz of all 3 types of steak: Flat Iron, Rump and Ribeye, cooked rare (I know that this is far too rare for some people but quite honestly they were melt in the mouth and just divine). The Greedy Cow comes with 2 sauces (we chose BBQ and Peppercorn - The peppercorn was our favourite and we would probably just order 2 of the same next time), 2 portions of chunky chips.
Steak usually comes served with rocket and parmesan on the side of the plate but we asked for it to be in a separate dish for this cheese hater.
Quite honestly, I have not stopped thinking about this food since - It really was one of the best steakhouses we have ever been to and we have told everyone to go there.
We definitely didn't have room for dessert - The waitress even told us we'd done really well to eat what we had!
?What are the prices like at Cowshed?
For our 2 starters, 2 pints, 2 soft drinks and Greedy Cow the bill came to £110 (You pay a £20 deposit for your table when booking). This felt really good value for the amount and quality of great food that we had.
An 8oz fillet steak comes with rocket and parmesan costing £28. Sides like fries are extra costing £3.75.
Cowshed Facilities
The toilets are down a set of fairly steep stairs and are surprisingly light and airy considering they are in the basement of the property. Completely squeeky clean and well stocked.
Special Events at Cowshed
You can hire the room upstairs for special events and this would make a great venue for a special birthday. The booths in the dining room are more suited to groups of 4 or less but upstairs there is room for slightly larger groups.
Are there other Cowshed Steak restaurants?
Sadly not - this is a one off in Liverpool. Well worth travelling to from further afield. This restaurant has just been included in the Good Food Guide Top 100 restaurants for 2024 so well done to them!
How dressy is Cowshed?
Not dressy at all. You will find all sorts of outfits - some smart casual, some people come straight from work so are in their office gear and some people are casual in jeans.
Would we go again to Cowshed?
I think the answer to that is pretty obvious - Yes, definitely! People often describe Cowshed as the best steakhouse in Liverpool (actually Cowshed themselves call themself a 'Beefhouse') and we can totally understand why.
