Its taken me years to appreciate how lucky we are to have the St Helens Theatre Royal on our doorstep. For a small theatre, I’m constantly amazed by the standard of their performances. Last week, we went to see Snow White and the Seven Dwarves which is on there until 14th January. Already, Regal Entertainments have had to extend their dates due to high demand. We were hopeful of a good evening then but even so we were blown away by how good it was.
Snow White is played by Coronation Street favourite, Lucy-Jo Hudson. She was simply perfect for the role. Elegant and demure but a strong performer. I can honestly say there were no weak performers – No cringing when someone began to sing and no forgetting lines.
The highlight of the show has got to be the 3D scene. I have never heard our 6yo laugh like it. Pure magic and so clever. Really and truly, you have to visit to experience this.
Johnny Vegas is the Magic Mirror. There has been many announcements about how he isn’t actually there at the performance as it is pre-filmed so we weren’t surprised. Out of the whole show though, this is the only bit I thought it could do without. I understand that he is a big name around here but honestly the actors on stage are plenty good enough to fill this theatre over and over again.
As usual at the Theatre Royal the costumes and dancers are stunning. This year the set changes were even more efficient than usual – There were no slow parts or sections inserted just to fill time (apart from Andy Pandy sketch but everyone seemed to be howling laughing so it is obviously a popular element).
Our favourite Simon Foster is usually St Helens’ resident Dame but there are no Dames in Snow White! Never fear though, he makes a brilliant Wicked Queen. The Seven Dwarves are just joyful – I loved the little jokes about them being one short (or all short). There are some real pedigree actors in this gang and they have a wonderful rapport with each other.
If you do manage to go (and please do!), be prepared to get a good soaking. You won’t escape it but it is so funny!
Tickets for Snow White are still available at £11 for various time until Sun 14th Jan 2018.
