Do I have to be able to sew to be crafty? – Day 29 Project 366

I’ve been asking myself this question forever. I’ve always loved having a go at ‘stuff’ – I started making cards years ago long before I discovered cakes and everyone knows where my dabble at making cakes took me. But yet, I’ve never really considered myself to be ‘crafty’ because I can’t sew. I come from a family where our Mum knows everything there is to know about a sewing machine – I’ve never needed to know how to make clothes or fix garments because Mum has always been there to do it … and so much better than I could. Last year though I made a decision to become familiar with materials other than paper and cake – I learnt to knit and discovered I LOVED it. My mission this year is to tackle crochet but I know being so short of time means that I’m not going to be able to learn everything I want to in a year. Eventually, I do want to learn how to use a sewing machine and produce lovely handmade items but in the meantime, can I consider myself to be ‘crafting’? I’ve got tons of projects planned and hope to learn how to more »

Pink and Lilac 50th Birthday Cake: Cake of the Week Day 8 Project 366

The first Cake of the week for 2012 and what a lovely relaxed cake to start with. For a friend of a friend, the only request was for sponge and pink, white and lilac. I haven’t done any icing loops for ages and wanted a go at different coloured loops. Previous ‘loopy’ cake have always been in black and white. (Not sure if that’s the technical term) I definitely went for the less is more option on this cake – no point hiding an nice even covering if you have one. I’m going to try to attract a few more members of the Cake of the Week gang this year so please feel free to take part and spread the word. If you fancy it you can even download the badge. I get the feeling this won’t be the last cake that features as part of the Project 366 this year.

When a baby stops eating baby food – Project 5/366

I’ll admit I’ve always been a bit meh about Baby Led Weaning. It just seemed like a trendy term to me and for people who used words like ‘holistic’ and ‘organic’ and didn’t want to tell their baby what to do. Ok, so you can shoot me now. I admit I had no evidence of why I felt like this, it just irritated me. Until today. We have been struggling for a couple of weeks now to get Tara to eat baby food and the bits she would have are getting smaller and smaller. I thought at first it was the 4-6 month jars that weren’t tasty enough and that as soon as she ate some of my homemade puree she would be fine. It didn’t happen. Tara has a wicked left arm – it can come out of nowhere and knock anything on a spoon across a room in an instant. Give her something to chew on herself though and she never knocks it back. I’m presuming this is Baby Led Weaning at its extreme – when the baby says, ‘sod off with your weedy tasting baby food- I want to feed myself’. And so we are trying, but more »

When the girls met Widow Twanky – Day 3 Project 366

I know I said I wasn’t going to post every day to the blog but I’m happy with today’s picture – not the most perfect evidence of photography, I know but it was great to be able to take the girls behind stage at our local panto and meet an old friend who is starring as Widow Twanky (and was completely brilliant!) Its back to school and some sort of normality for us tomorrow, which also means I may have to be a bit more creative about taking the pics for Project 366. I’ve booked two excursions so far this year all in the name of having a good subject to take a picture of, of course! I really can’t keep using this as an excuse though – I may actually have to do some work and bake some cakes by the end of the week if only to pay for some of my plans!

Getting Children To Eat Pickles – Project 2/366

A New Year’s Resolution that both me and Mr C feel strongly about this year is that we want to eat and cook more homecooked food. I’m not promising that we will never again get to 11pm and have to stick a pizza in the oven for tea but hopefully we won’t do it quite so often. Another part of this plan is to get the children to be a lot more adventurous with their food. I’ve always had a rule that they need to try a food at least twice before trying to convince me that they don’t like it but have to be honest that sometimes I I just give them what I know they like. They are by no means the fussiest of children but they are quite traditional in what they seem to like eating. Mr C decided today was a good day to get Violet to try a fiery hot pickled onion – Not sure V was quite so keen on the idea judging by her face! Perhaps, I will save trying prawns and mussels for another day! BTW, please excuse the state of the kitchen – we’ve just come back from holiday!

New Year’s Day 2012 – Project 366 Day One

Well hello 2012. How quickly you have joined us. 2011 was a great year for the Costello family so you have got a lot to live up to. With any new year comes along a multitude of resolutions and this year is no different. I do intend on revisiting last year’s plans to see how I fared but just wanted quickly to introduce my newest project/obsession. I’m joining in with hundreds of fellow bloggers/tweeters to try to take a photo a day during 2012. I’m no photographer but want to create a snapshot of our year and hopefully along the way, improve my photography skills. Why not join in with me? I’m not going to post every photo on the blog (because quite frankly, I think you would be bored to tears) but will post any pics that have an interesting story here.  The whole collection will be posted on my Flickr page. I completely love Flickr – I was a fan long before I was a blogger and made some lovely connections there. If my 366 project does nothing this year but remind me to revisit some of the fabulous creative people on there, then it is more »
