Pony Cake
Yahoo!! I’ve got to the end of NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month) where I have posted every day. Apologies to the people that have received every single post – I promise not to be quite so frequent from now on. Having said that, it has been a really enjoyable month – I haven’t had to fabricate posts, in fact I’ve still got posts that I wanted to put up but just haven’t had time. What better way to celebrate the end of September than with a cake post. This is a cake that went out today for little Georgia who is having her 5th birthday party tomorrow. She is pony mad and is having a Pony/Princess party. There will be 2 real ponies present and the little girls will get to brush their manes and put ribbons in their hair. The princess bit was just in case it rained which amazingly enough there is no chance of it doing. I’ve never made a pony before so this was a bit of a challenge as was making all the marzipan hay – I will admit to getting Nanna Aardvark involved in sticking some of it on! Its not a great photo more »
Shoes – The Gallery
I didn’t think I was going to enter this week’s Gallery but I accidentally came across this photo and couldn’t resist. Little Violet trying on her Dad’s shoes. I flippin love that kid. We also quite frequently have sugar shoes in this house. Here are a couple of examples … The Mini Slippers and the good old sugar shoe!
Cake of the Week – Cath Kidston and Personalised Cupcakes
Another special celebration for our house – lovely Millie was 9 last week and therefore has to be Cake of the Week. Millie is truly lovely – she is gentle, grown-up, fun and innocent all at once. She mixes so well with her friends and we are so proud of her. She tries hard at everything she does and I know we are biased but she is beautiful too! Some of my most challenging cakes have been Millie’s birthday cakes – Her first birthday cake was a 3 tier castle cake (I’ll be honest – I just felt like learning how to do a castle cake). We have had Snow White cakes (with all 7 dwarves), Balamory & Hannah Montana. This year, we had our usual chat about which cake she would like (with me silently panicking about how I would fit one in) and after a short foray into the world of Moshi Monsters, she decided leave it to me. I tried to do something that shows her being a little bit more grown up but still child-friendly.  Millie has inherited my love of Cath Kidston, so that was it.  The birthday party was a lot smaller this year more »
Cake of the Week – Hawaiian Hula Girl
A bright and chirpy cake for this week’s Cake of the Week. Little Phoebe was having an Hawaii theme party for her second birthday. Her mum, Clare always has the best ideas and finds the best designs for her daughter’s parties and cakes. I first got to know Clare 3 years ago when I made her vintage wedding cake and my first ever ‘wonky’ cake for her then 2 year old. She has always known how to challenge me – wouldn’t want it any other way! I must find pics of those cakes. The cake for Phoebe was to match her tableware and include a marzipan model of Phoebe with her blonde hair and blue eyes. I loved the challenge of doing something different and really enjoyed making all the flowers for the side. They were all dusted to give the illusion of being darker at the edges. I made the skirt by pushing marzipan through a sugar gun (cake designers always have fabulous arm muscles!) The tree was based on the trees used on my gruffalo cake with a pillar inside covered with chocolate flavoured fondant… and of course the compulsory smiley face! What other cakes are out there more »
Cake Topper Tutorial – How to make an icing Hello Kitty – Cake of the Week
After the success of the gruffalo tutorial, I wish to present another ‘How to’ tutorial – How to make a fondant Hello Kitty cake topper again using a creme egg middle. I have had a few people asking what to use if creme eggs are not available (normally between August-January) – I would use a mini Milky Way or Mars Bar. Firstly cover the creme egg in sugar glue then wrap around with a thin layer of white icing – this is going to be covered in a dress later so it doesn’t have to be too neat. Try to make the seam either underneath or at the back though. Sit the covered body on a flattened blob of white icing to steady it. Roll 2 large malteser size into short sausages and flatten down one end to make a foot and leg shape. Roll a really large oval shape and attach to the body for the head – at this point your model might look a bit like one of those Alessi characters. Small yellow dot for nose. 2 slightly larger oval dots for eyes. I used a black squeezy icing tube for the whiskers but a black icing more »
Cake of the week – Hello Kitty Cake & Cupcakes
Very very late posting my Cake of the Week – A Hello Kitty Cake complete with matching Cupcakes and Cake Topper. This is a special cake for me as it is my daughter, Violet’s 5th birthday cake – and I get to eat it! Yay! The Hello Kitty cake topper is made with a creme egg middle – I will be posting a tutorial very soon. Instead of cutting the cake at the party, each child (and there were 40 of them!) took a cupcake home. It was the first outing for my square cupcakes which I will definitely be using again. The cake is currently sitting on my dining room table (its a fruit) which we will start to demolish as soon as we have finished Tara’s christening cake no wonder I will never be a size 10! – As usual I will put the linky up if anyone wishes to share their cake of the week. I have a list of tried and tested recipes that I intend on adding soon for Cake of the Week – feel free to join in.
Cake of the week – Muppets Cake
Well here is my Cake of the Week – a very special one as it is my daughter, Tara’s christening cake from last week. I know its not a traditional christening cake but we don’t do traditional in this house. My elder daughters both had tv themes for their christening cake. Millie had The Mr Men and Violet had Fifi and the Flowertots. Each of the figures was made using a creme egg for the body (a mini mars bar or milky way would have done just as well for some of the squarer figures). Kermit was really hard and Miss Piggy took forever! If you have read any of my previous posts this week, you will know I am running a link up for fellow cake lovers to post a pic of their Cake of the Week. It doesn’t have to be massive, it can just be one that you are proud of, enjoyed making or perhaps has got a story behind it. If we all visit each other’s Cake of the Week, it would be great – if you have time to comment even better! Add your blog post url to the linky below (click where it says more »
Peppa Pig Cake – Finished it Friday
I am having the type of day today when it is hard to imagine completing any task – even getting a wash load in the machine seems impossible. No particular reason, just one of those days. So it is nice to look back over the last week and think, ‘yes, I have finished something’. The cake pictured is obviously a Peppa and George cake – a very popular choice for tiny humans under 6. The recipient was Hugo, the little one of Cara from Freckles Family who handily hosts Finished it Friday. This is where we can show and tell what we have finished in the last week – whether it be a book, a crafty project or even a favourite recipe. This is my offering for this week – I also completed the Gruffalo Cake which has had a fantastic reception. Who knows what I will manage to get completed in the coming week!
Cath Kidston meets Peppa Pig
I cannot believe my daughter’s birthday has come around again so quickly – This time she is the big 4 – although for months now she has been refusing to admit she is 4 and says she is ’3 again!’. On her actual birthday we asked her how old she is now and she said 5! As they say here in St Helens – She is having us on! I have wanted to do Cath Kidston colours for ages and what better excuse than your daughter’s cake? All she said she wanted on it was Peppa Pig (again!) – as the weeks went on though she started adding more characters that she wanted – maybe next year… I plan on doing more Cath Kidston inspired cakes as I think they can be suited to all manner of occasions – I even plan on doing the rose pattern painted on – will have to have a steady hand for that day!
Princess Castle Cake
One of ‘our’ favourite programmes has recently become Ben & Holly’s Magic Kingdom. (When I say ‘our’ every parent knows that you lose control of the tv until the little ones are in bed!) For a kids programme it is really quite funny – especially the Queen with her accent and sarcastic remarks. I always picture them when I make this cake which is quite a popular one. This was for a little girl that has ordered some of the most amazing cakes I have done so far – Her Mum has the best ideas! Everything except the princesses tiara and the number 4 is edible. Enjoy!
