Princess Castle Cake – Cake of the Week
Ooh I love a girly cake. My brief was to fit in with a Princess Party. I wanted to put my own stamp on it and not just make a princess but somewhere for her to live obviously! It was REALLY windy around here yesterday so I only added the glitter and sparkle at the venue (which was really princessey btw!) My Millie went around pretending it was for her so I think it got a thumbs up from our Princess! Have you been baking any creations this week and blogging about them? Don’t be shy – Join in!
Pink and Lilac 50th Birthday Cake: Cake of the Week Day 8 Project 366
The first Cake of the week for 2012 and what a lovely relaxed cake to start with. For a friend of a friend, the only request was for sponge and pink, white and lilac. I haven’t done any icing loops for ages and wanted a go at different coloured loops. Previous ‘loopy’ cake have always been in black and white. (Not sure if that’s the technical term) I definitely went for the less is more option on this cake – no point hiding an nice even covering if you have one. I’m going to try to attract a few more members of the Cake of the Week gang this year so please feel free to take part and spread the word. If you fancy it you can even download the badge. I get the feeling this won’t be the last cake that features as part of the Project 366 this year.
Henry Hoover Cake: Cake of the Week
Yay! A completely new design for me – I know there are hundreds of Henry Hoover cakes out there but I’d never done one before. To be honest, I didn’t know there was such a demand by 3 year olds for hoover cakes! The most difficult part was getting the nozzle to stick out of the cake and then attach seamlessly to the pipe. The eyes were my favourite bit as he came to life instantly. I hate to say it but I’m becoming a bit of a fan of sculpted cakes – they just have that ‘WOW’ about them. Zac recognised Henry straightaway and his Dad posted a Facebook pic the next day saying Zac was delighted and they were finding it hard to stop him hugging his cake! Aaaaw! I’ve had a bit of a flurry of activity in preparation for 2012 and it is looking really exciting on the cake front. I’ve met up with some lovely people and am giddy about what is in store. Watch this space! I’m hoping in 2012 to have a big push on Cake of the Week. I intend on promoting entries a lot more and linking up with many more more »
Pink Lady’s 80th Birthday Cake – Cake of the Week
A day later than expected but for very good reason. This weekend was a mammoth one. We had the annual presentation for swimming in which both girls got decorated with medals, our first sleepover (3am in case you were wondering!) and I held my first Clandestine Cake Club last night. There was simply no energy left for blogging and unbelievably it has taken 24 hours for me to able to even look at a cake since. But there was a cake last week, this traditional lady’s 80th birthday cake for a lovely family. I added little diamontes to the sugar pink roses as her son tells me the birthday girl likes some bling. The cake was a fruit cake which made a nice change from sponge and I always think the finish is so much cleaner. Here is a gratuitous picture of the handmade flowers up close too! I’m expecting some entries from yesterday’s Clandestine Cake Club amongst others in this week’s Cake of the Week. I’m still chuckling that I have had a request for my Mum’s lemon drizzle cake recipe – Talk about stealing my thunder!
Cake of the Week – Mickey Mouse Cake
I’ll admit it – until this week I could NOT STAND Mickey or Minnie cakes. They are so difficult to get right especially the mouth and there are so many Disney disaster cakes out there that I just didn’t want to join. This was a 2nd birthday cake and I pretty much had free reign once again with the design. I was tempted to do a small model on top of the Number 2 shaped tin but decided that would be chickening out and I wanted to go for something bolder (plus I can’t remember if I actually own a number 2 shaped tin!) I cooked an 8 inch sponge and 2 4 inch sponges (luckily I had just picked up a child’s 4 inch cake tin from Home Bargains a couple of weeks earlier never expecting to actually use it for proper baking – it only cost 59p!) I cut the smaller cakes into the shape of the ears and then covered all of them in white icing. I have a theory that it must be so much more appealing to bite into a cake primarily covered in white and then coloured icing rather than a huge dollop of more »
Cake of the Week – Saints Rugby Cake
I had to take a week off Cake of the Week last week – Half term just had me beaten. But I wasn’t slacking on the work front. Oh No! Coming from St Helens, rugby cakes are always a popular choice. Our new, Saints Rugby League Stadium is due to open this month and you would have to be living in a hole not to feel the buzz in the town. In fact, the new stadium and a new footbridge that is being erected in the shape of a rugby ball nearly resulted in this cake not happening. Our only cake supplies shop is at the opposite end of town and is a pain to get to but sometimes needs must – and this was one of those times. The whole town was gridlocked last week as roads were closed for the new bridge – when you only have one car and 2 children needing to be at a party and 1 husband needing to be at work things get a little stressful. But anyway… the cake. A sponge cake for a family I’ve done TONS of cakes for before. My brief was a rugby pitch and a man more »
Cake of the Week – Globe Cake and Naked Lady Cake
Very late with Cake of the Week, I’m afraid. An unexpected trip to A&E with Vi yesterday and being generally exhausted from a fabulous weekend away does not make for a punctual blogger! Anyhoo, eventually we get to the cake. I never even got to meet the lady that ordered this cake of the man, Charlie who’s birthday it was. I have heard many things about them though through my friend, Kiera of Kiera’s Occasions who commissioned the cake. I have had good feedback though that the cake was thought to be ‘fabulous’ as it is always a bit of a gamble to do a completely different cake that doesn’t even really look like a cake. I haven’t got a sphere cake tin (I know! how do I cope?) but find 2 pyrex bowls work just as well. The globe is fairly correct in that the major continents are where they should be but obviously it’s not possible to do every teeny island so I improvised. I did drop Cuba though (sorry about that, Cuba!) and have to start again. Not sure why Charlie wanted a Naked Lady – the girls were most amused that she had sparkly stars on more »
Pony Cake
Yahoo!! I’ve got to the end of NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month) where I have posted every day. Apologies to the people that have received every single post – I promise not to be quite so frequent from now on. Having said that, it has been a really enjoyable month – I haven’t had to fabricate posts, in fact I’ve still got posts that I wanted to put up but just haven’t had time. What better way to celebrate the end of September than with a cake post. This is a cake that went out today for little Georgia who is having her 5th birthday party tomorrow. She is pony mad and is having a Pony/Princess party. There will be 2 real ponies present and the little girls will get to brush their manes and put ribbons in their hair. The princess bit was just in case it rained which amazingly enough there is no chance of it doing. I’ve never made a pony before so this was a bit of a challenge as was making all the marzipan hay – I will admit to getting Nanna Aardvark involved in sticking some of it on! Its not a great photo more »
Should I do ‘Rude’ cakes?
This is the rudest cake I do – To some people it may even be too rude. I have to admit I did think twice before I took the order on. The sad thing is, this isn’t the rudest cake I have been asked to do. Just last week I received a call from someone who was almost too embarrassed to ask for the cake she was after – a certain part of a male’s anatomy. I know there are many cake makers who will do ‘rude’ cakes but I’m not one of them. There is no order that I am so desperate for that I would subject myself to making something like that. I have the following rules before deciding to do a cake: Would I be happy for my children to see the cake? I have 3 young children and the cakes always spend time on our dining room table before leaving for the customer – This is really my rule of thumb. Funnily enough though, I was ok with them seeing the cake above – we are not prudish about bodies in this house and I felt there was a certain amount of decency about having the more »
