This is the rudest cake I do – To some people it may even be too rude. I have to admit I did think twice before I took the order on.
The sad thing is, this isn’t the rudest cake I have been asked to do. Just last week I received a call from someone who was almost too embarrassed to ask for the cake she was after – a certain part of a male’s anatomy.
I know there are many cake makers who will do ‘rude’ cakes but I’m not one of them. There is no order that I am so desperate for that I would subject myself to making something like that.
I have the following rules before deciding to do a cake:
- Would I be happy for my children to see the cake? I have 3 young children and the cakes always spend time on our dining room table before leaving for the customer – This is really my rule of thumb. Funnily enough though, I was ok with them seeing the cake above – we are not prudish about bodies in this house and I felt there was a certain amount of decency about having the marzipan ladies’ boobs covered up with stars.
- Would I be happy for my mum to know I was doing a particular cake? I’m still 13 at heart!
- Would it create a good impression on my website? I’ve always got to think about future customers – I like to come across as a reputable business and one that people would be happy recommending.
- Would I be comfortable spending time making the cake? There are some fabulous cakes out there of various parts of the anatomy but I really do wonder how the cake designer felt spending so much time in close proximity to those body parts!
What do you think? Do you have a policy on what you allow your children to see? Am i being too over-cautious? Let me know

To be honest I just don’t like those kinds of cakes, don’t know why, I’m certainly not a prude (honest!) but I don’t find them funny and I think its old hat, we are all past that now.
“Good taste in a cake is so much more than the flavour”…quite like that a bit of genius on my part! LOL x
Fabulous quote! I agree that those sort of cakes just seem a little dated now – unless of course the cake in question reflects the person’s job. Thanks for commenting x
Well I think I AM a prude but I’m a proud prude! It’s not something to be ashamed of. As far as I can see there’s no need for rude cakes, except for the shock value. If you don’t want to make rude ones, it’s entirely up to you. I guess it’s only a cake at the end of the day but if you don’t feel comfortable with the concept then you have your answer.
HI Maz,
Thanks for a great comment once again. I LOVE that you are a proud prude. I think that the majority of rude cakes are ordered for hen nights and the like purely because people feel its the thing to do and agree that once the shock factor has gone, they must be left with a cake that no-one fancies anymore.
Hx
I understand about the children seeing, but it won’t harm them to see ‘bits’ if you’re ok with explaining that it’s the human body and nothing to be ashamed of. As long as it’s not overtly sexual it should be fine. Fine art is full of nudes that aren’t sexual or covered up, even TV and adverts sometimes have more nudity than that. Even a boob cake should be fine. You could have a lot more nudity as long as it’s tasteful and you children wont be affected by it [and they might even be better for it].
But yeah, the rest should be more to do with how comfortable you are doing it, how you feel about doing it justice if you’re feeling a bit embarrassed etc. and also whether you can turn that business down. If you don’t want to put future business off then don’t put it on the site or talk about it. Simple!
Hi and thanks for commenting. Some very interesting points here. We have no problem with the children seeing ‘bits’ and have been very open about everyone’s bodies – We know that traditionally children find other people’s body parts to be funny and try to discourage it. I think there is a call for fine art and would love the children to appreciate it. Much as I would love my cakes to be considered Fine Art, I have to question that anyone would order a cake with fine art in mind, however. The types of calls I have tended to get have been more concerned with either shocking/titillation and/or humour.
I am more than happy with the decision I have made for my business. Embarrassment doesn’t come into it (with 3 children, there is very little that can embarrass me these days) – the point of the post was really to find other people’s views on ‘rude’ cakes especially other cake designers. I would love to get an opinion from someone who has ordered such a cake to find out their thoughts behind it and what they thought of the person making it.
Thanks again. Hx.
I am not a prude. I thought the cake above was done very tastefully if you excuse the pun! Personally I don’t see why people want rude cakes? Whats wrong with something pretty or meaningful to that person, for instance my friend loves handbags so for her birthday her partner had ordered her a cake that looked like a handbag, thing is though the way I look at it is the cake isn’t going to be on display too long before it gets eaten and I always feel bad if its a beautiful cake and then I cut into it lol
I am far from a prude but think your self imposed rules are a good way of going about it. I wouldn’t want to be making a cake of bits of people, the above cake shows people as a whole rather than fixating on parts of their anatomy. By the way, they are great cakes!
I had the same dilemma earlier this year I got a call from a hens party looking for the same thing and like you my cakes spend time on the kitchen table. I have two girls aged 8 and 12 so I made the decision ( just like you
) not to take the order on and was glad about the decision. the other side of the coin is I was asked to make boobs, which I did without a second thought, for me it was the fact that I have girls, a little bit hypocritical I know but you have to go with your gut feeling.
Glad I’m not the only one – still not sure why anyone would want to eat individual body parts. Eee!
Hi…Myself and my husband are cake makers in Scotland…This question has interested me as we’ve made both a Winky cake and today delivered a Fairy cake…we’ve done plenty of corset cakes both front and rear views…the Winky and corsets didn’t bother me and to be honest neither idd the Fairy but it was interesting to see the comments on our Facebook page…Everyone thought the cake itself was brilliant but a lot said they wouldn’t be able to eat it…The guy it was for loved it which i guess is what matters…We also have 3 young children and our little boy who’s 4 came in from Nursery just as i was finishing the cake off…he looked at it and asked what it was..i told him it was a fairy…then he looked along the worktop at a Fairy Castle cake i’d finished earlier and said…”Mummy…You’ve done two Fairy Cakes…!!!!” xxxx
