Book Review – Water for Elephants – Sara Gruen

Well, you didn’t expect another book review so soon, did you? I’m on a roll. I probably would never have picked this book were it not for taking part in the Love-a-Book on line reading group. The front cover seemed a little soppy for me with a man and woman staring into each other’s eyes and I’m not that particularly interested in elephants! I would have missed out – I really enjoyed this book.

Set in a travelling circus, the main character, Jacob is the vet in charge of the circus animals. The book follows the sometimes harrowing life on the road but also alternates between that and his current life in an old people’s home.

I would be very surprised if the author didn’t have a relative currently in a home or had a lot to do with them, as the writing was very realistic and made me think about life in a home.

I have no such experience of a travelling circus but again enjoyed the writing. There were not too many characters and they all interlocked really well. My only criticism, if any, is that occasionally my mind wandered when there were scenes involving the animals. The scenes with Walter and his 8-pager are hilarious.

I don’t want to give away too much of the story but was pleased that the end was not too predictable (although I did predict what would happen to Marlena).

I will be looking out for the Sara Gruen’s other book, Ape House.

I am looking forward to seeing what the other participants of Love-a-book thought – 5 out of 5 for me!
